Pilot Jobs - The 2011 Outlook

With a difficult 2009 and 2010 out the way, what does 2011 have in store for the once battered work force of pilots?

Recent months have seen an increase in pilot jobs, particularly in the Middle East and Asia Pacific region. Interestingly, many companies, especially in Europe were hunkered down for a tough time in 2010 through 2011 winter, but with a healthy winter season, operators are expecting a much better 2011 summer than they could have hoped for in 2010.

We're actually not that far off approaching the peaks seen prior to the economic collapse with 2012 looking to be very good indeed. This can be seen by some very interesting news from CTC Aviation Group. They have announced that FlyDubai, the new low cost airline is asking for 400 pilots to be provided over the coming 3 years.

Absolutely exceptional news, but why is it so significant? It's tremendously significant for the European region especially where the operators are still struggling to maintain their profits. While Asia and the Middle East have significantly increased their profits, Europe is still seemingly treading water.

Not really a factor for pilots, all that's needed is movement somewhere in the world to keep a shortage at home. Attrition caused by retirement and natural wastage and by having a continual supply of pilots leaving for the Middle East, the pool of pilots available to the European region is constantly dwindling. When the significant recruitment returns there will be many less people available.

Not so significant in the short term, but from a medium point of view, this is very significant. It is likely to see a return to the pre-recession hiring spree, maybe not quite to the same level, but not far off it.

From a corporate pilot point of view this news is great too. Newly qualified pilots are much more likely to take a look at the 'low hanging' fruit of the pilot hiring schemes, while an approaching predicted upturn in the economy sees wealth becoming more freely released on business jets and travel.

All the business aviation sector needs now is for the banks to ease up their financing of new business jets and significant growth could return.
