Whether you are an active duty military personnel or a veteran who has served the nation at its hour of need, if you dream of earning a college degree to build your career, then the country owes it to you to turn it into reality.
There are many schools and universities in the country that are committed to providing quality education to members of the armed forces. They have specialized divisions for active duty personnel and military veterans education. Many military friendly universities accept credits for military experience besides offering flexible programs that fit the demanding schedule and lifestyle of men and women from the armed forces. These institutions also assist military students and veterans in claiming the benefits that they qualify for.
And with the advent of online degree programs, it has become possible for active duty military personnel as well as veterans to get a college education and learn new skills or lay the groundwork for joining the civilian workforce. Online degree programs allow active duty personnel to continue their studies from anyplace and remove barriers to education posed by transfers and deployments. Besides, they are self-paced programs making it possible for them to study at their own pace.
Special Benefits
The government is also doing its bit to provide education benefits to those who serve the country in uniform. It passed the post 9/11 GI Bill in July 2008 providing education benefits to personnel who served on active duty for 90 or more days since September 10, 2001. The bill, which came into effect on August 1, 2009, is expected to generate extensive interest in degree programs amongst current and former service members as it includes benefits such as:
Up to 100% tuition fee coverage
A monthly stipend for housing
$1000 an year for books and supplies
Active duty military personnel and veterans are also entitled to some other benefit programs. One such program is Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program that helps veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. Veterans who qualify for this program are eligible for post-secondary training at a college, university, or an institution.
The other benefit that active duty soldiers enjoy is up to 100 percent tuition assistance for on-campus or online degree programs taken during off duty hours. Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard are eligible for this type of financial assistance.
Serving the Soldiers
The Military Student Bill of Rights envisions basic right of all military student populations to satisfactory college marketing, admissions, and student services practices. The bill was borne out of the need for fair treatment and consideration of military students looking to complete their higher education.
Both the government and academic institutions recognize the supreme sacrifice that our military personnel make in order to serve the nation. They have made adequate provisions to serve these brave soldiers back in any way they can!
